Cranfield University Technology Park is situated just outside Milton Keynes, with convenient access to the M1 motorway, making it easily accessible for tenants and visitors alike. The Technology Park embarked on a project to enhance the initial experience within the innovation centre and café space.
The objective was to increase rental demand for the suites by creating a more inviting and functional environment. The upgrade included improvements to the café, seminar room, meeting rooms, and overall reception area. The design concept aimed to foster a seamless flow of information and communication, while reflecting the park's identity and its association with aerospace and aviation.
Space
CafÉ
The café underwent a significant expansion to maximize the available space and create a more inviting atmosphere. The design incorporated a central island and a variety of seating options, including private dining booths that could double up as informal meeting spaces. In addition, there is banquette seating, conventional dining tables, and a breakfast bar running the length of the space. The design concept drew inspiration from the university's aviation heritage, incorporating elements reminiscent of hangar shapes. The colour palette was carefully chosen to align with the park's brand identity, utilizing muted tones.
Reception
The reception area was redesigned to create a fluid and dynamic space. The introduction of a central island as a focal point enhanced the flow and functionality of the area. The design incorporated sustainable elements such as Marmoleum flooring and PET acoustic panelling from Collective Agency and Woven Image to contribute to the overall aesthetic and acoustic quality.
Meeting Rooms
Special attention was given to the mechanical and electrical services in the meeting rooms, with a focus on concealing them within ceiling voids. Additionally, improvements were made to the room's acoustics, including baffles on the ceiling and enhanced sound insulation to the sides. Contemporary audio-visual equipment was installed to ensure user-friendliness and efficiency.
The seminar room underwent technology upgrades and improvements to the HVAC system to ensure optimal comfort for tenants. The renovated space was available for rent to internal and external clients, providing a versatile venue for seminars, workshops, and other events.
Café Canopy
The café at Cranfield University Technology Park was enhanced with the addition of a canopy supplied by Zenith. This architectural feature extends the café's capacity during warmer weather while adding a modern and visually appealing element to the business park. The sleek design seamlessly integrates with the overall aesthetic, providing a sheltered outdoor seating area for tenants and visitors to enjoy.
Design
The project prioritized sustainability and cost-effectiveness in material selection. WSG provided joinery solutions, Kvadrat supplied the fabric, and Collective Agency contributed to the acoustic elements. The furniture selection included products from Muuto, Hay, New design group and Boss, while carpets were sourced from Interface, ensuring a harmonious and cohesive design.Influence and Collaboration The design concept for Cranfield University Technology Park drew inspiration from its surroundings and fostered strong links to the park itself. The aim was to create an environment that would attract start-up businesses and provide them with access to the talent pool available at Cranfield University. The park's reputation in the aerospace and aviation sectors influenced the design, incorporating elements that paid homage to its rich history and expertise.
