People

Nautica Law LLP is a specialist maritime and commercial legal firm. They appointed TDA to design and deliver a new workplace for them at a crucial moment in their company’s journey.

Formerly known as Winter Scott LLP, the client had chosen to restructure, reinvent and grow their business in the wake of the pandemic. As well as a major rebrand, a move into a bright new space that would appeal to new talent was key to the transformation.

Space

Set in what was once a key stomping ground for wealthy London merchants trading goods arriving at nearby docks such as Billingsgate, Nautica Law’s new 4,230-sq-ft workplace at 1 Great Tower Street is a far cry from their previous basement location.

Staff and clients are welcomed into the sixth-floor space by a lounge-style front of house area that offers outstanding natural light and views over the historic heart of London’s financial district. A folding wall between this and the adjacent boardroom opens up to create a flexible events space that also gives the front of house area access to even more spectacular views of the capital.

A mix of single and double partners’ offices equipped with height adjustable desks are located around the perimeter of the space and offer a homely look and feel thanks to a soft, neutral palette and curated displays.

Meanwhile, a cosy tea point and break out space provides an excellent opportunity for social interaction and agile working.

The space also includes a wellness room where staff can retreat for some much-needed rest and recuperation.

Design
The design scheme of Nautica Law’s new space proves that neutral workplace interiors needn’t be dull.

Charterparty agreements, one of Nautica Law’s key specialisms, served as the main inspiration for our design concept for the space. We chose to reflect the duality of these ‘split paper’ documents with a scheme that provides contrast and balance between light, off-white and taupe tones, timber, soft textures and darker accents.

Nautica Law’s new visual identity also features throughout the space with manifestations and graphics provided by Renaissance Graphics.

We worked with top furniture suppliers including NOR11, Moventi, Muuto and Modus to deliver a scheme that offers comfort while perfectly suiting the contemporary, neutral colour palette.

While we were able to use much of the space’s existing carpet, products from highly sustainable flooring suppliers Interface and IVC were also incorporated into the new design.

Meet the designer

Silvia Larocca
Associate
Silvia moved to London in 2014 having graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Technology from the Universidad de Lleida in Spain. After spending a year working for a boutique architect’s studio, she joined TDA in 2015 and has since gained 7 years’ experience designing beautiful, yet functional workspaces.

As a designer, Silvia’s technical knowledge makes her an asset in any project team as not only is she able to develop creative concepts, but she can also help clients to clearly envisage their new space thanks to her excellent CAD, 3D modelling and visualisation skills.

Silvia’s design concepts are always led by her clients and their brands, and she believes that being approachable at all times and building client relationships that are based on transparency and trust are by far the best ways to ensure a successful project.
