People

Jetro is a Japanese, government-related organisation that promotes trade and investment between Japan and the rest of the world.

They appointed TDA to design and build a new London workspace to support them as they help small to medium-sized businesses from Japan enter the UK market, and vice versa.

Problem-solving layouts

With its spectacular views of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Jetro’s new workplace at Cheapside House is the perfect location for their team to entertain and get to know their clients.

However, while some parts of the South-facing space do offer some good wellbeing benefits thanks to the constant natural light they receive throughout the day, the reduced ceiling height in other areas makes them less suitable for supporting staff health and happiness.

After carrying out a detailed analysis of the space, we were able to suggest an optimised layout in which desking was placed around the perimeter of the space where ceiling heights and natural light levels are favourable. This was important for creating a feeling of openness and supporting workers’ mental wellbeing in an area where they are more likely to sit for longer periods.

Meanwhile, we increased the functionality of the central spine by dedicating this area to collaborative working.

Separate staff and visitor entrances cater specifically to the needs of each group.

Upon entering their new workplace, staff are greeted by a welcoming breakout area while clients can make use of comfortable banquette seating in an informal meeting space.

Design

The space between

Our initial design concept for Jetro’s new workplace was based on the Japanese architectural feature the engawa; a porch style area that runs around the outside of many Japanese buildings, providing a bridge between the interior and exterior.

To reflect Jetro’s own role as a bridge between Japan and the rest of the world, we proposed to translate this traditional architectural feature into their new office environment with a mixture of timber finishes, minimalist furniture, Crittal-style glazing that mimics the structure of traditional Japanese screens and lush planting throughout.

We also proposed to install a zen garden in the staff breakout space to provide a moment of calm during the busy working day.

Daniele Bottos
Head of Design (Regions)
“This project is a great example of our ability to leave our egos at the door and collaborate successfully with clients. While the finished design for Jetro’s new workplace differs from our original creative concept, they clearly saw something in our approach that resonated, and we are delighted that we were able to work with their team to develop a scheme that feels 100% right for them.”
